Overview

Nyaung-U is the administrative town in Nyaung-U Township, Nyaung-U District, in the Mandalay Region of central Myanmar. Nyaung-U is located on the eastern bank of the Ayeyarwaddy River. It is just 4 km away from the old Bagan and a famous tourist attraction. The Shwezigon Pagoda is located there with a golden bell-shaped tower on the square land. This is one of the oldest and most impressive monuments of Bagan.

The other popular locations in and around Nyaung-U are Htilominlo Pagoda -  one of the five most ancient temples of Bagan with the majestic structure and the height of the tower's top up to 46 m, Gubyaukgyi Pagoda, Ahlodaw Pyae Pagoda, and Hgnet Pyit Taung Hill - "the hill of the cut-down bird". The colorful Nyaung U Market is definitely a must-see. The market is divided into different sections which sell a variety of items and especially include a wet market. You can find almost everything from fresh seafood, vegetables, handicrafts to Myanmar sarong (often called it "longyi" by local people). Make sure to shop around and bargain. Moreover, Nyaung-U is also the home of Nyaung U Airport. This airport can be reached by air, by railway, by bus, and by boat.
